Current Clinical Practice in Valvular Heart Disease: What Has Changed and How
Speaker: Dr. Tetsuhiro Yamano
Lecturer, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Board Member, The Japan Society of Ultrasonics in Medicine
Dr. Yamano is a leading expert in cardiac ultrasound for valvular heart disease and structural heart disease (SHD). In this lecture, he will provide a review-style overview focusing primarily on the evaluation of valvular heart disease using echocardiography.
Lecturer Profile
Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Kumamoto University in 1995 and joined the Second Department of Internal Medicine (now the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine) at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in the same year. After working at the National Cardiovascular Center and the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, he was appointed University Lecturer in the Department of Infection Control and Laboratory Medicine / Cardiovascular Medicine, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in 2009, and has served as Lecturer since 2023. He currently serves as Deputy Director of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine and Deputy Director of the Endoscopy and Ultrasound Center (Head of the Echocardiography Laboratory) at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine Hospital. His clinical specialty is echocardiography in valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathy, with a particular focus on structural heart disease (SHD).

Talk 1 Overview
The advent of minimally invasive catheter-based treatments, such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), which can be performed in place of conventional surgery, has significantly transformed the clinical management of valvular heart disease. In this lecture, I will discuss how clinical practice has changed, focusing particularly on mitral regurgitation (MR), which affects a large number of patients, incorporating actual case examples and the latest evidence.
The Role of Transthoracic Echocardiography in the Diagnosis of Valvular Heart Disease: Toward Accurate Diagnosis and Severity Assessment
Speaker: Mr. Tomoya Yoneda
Chief Medical Technologist, Yodoyabashi General Clinic / Part-Time Lecturer, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Kyoto University
He is a distinguished clinical technologist in the field of echocardiography for valvular heart disease. In his lecture, he will present real clinical cases to provide a practical perspective on examinations, helping deepen your understanding for everyday clinical practice starting tomorrow.
Lecturer Profile
Joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Kyoto University Hospital in 1987, where he engaged in cellular analysis and physiological function testing. After serving as Deputy Chief Clinical Laboratory Technologist, he has been Chief Clinical Laboratory Technologist at Tomoai-kai Yodoyabashi General Clinic and Part-time Lecturer in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University since 2024. His specialty is cardiovascular ultrasonography, particularly echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound examinations.

Talk 2 Overview
Recent advances in the treatment of valvular heart disease have been remarkable, with therapeutic options and indications expanding significantly compared with just a few years ago. In particular, the development of transcatheter interventions has greatly reduced the burden on patients before and after surgery. At the same time, however, the assessment of treatment indications and postoperative evaluation has become increasingly complex. In this talk, I will discuss these challenges and issues from the perspective of echocardiography, which plays an indispensable role in the management of valvular heart disease.
