Reappraisal of Kampo Medicines in the Treatment of Constipation: Characteristics of Their Purgative Effects and Analysis of the Underlying Mechanisms

Speaker: Dr. Risako Kon

Lecturer, Laboratory of Biomolecular Pharmacology, Hoshi University

There are many Kampo (traditional Japanese) medicines used to treat constipation. Although these formulations are selected based on the patient’s “Sho” (individual diagnostic pattern) according to Kampo theory, the differences from Western medicine and the precise mechanisms by which specific herbal components exert their effects remain incompletely understood. Dr. Kon has been conducting research on aquaporins and the intestinal tract, exploring the mechanisms of action of various Kampo medicines used for constipation.

Lecturer Profile

Dr. Risako Kon received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Hoshi University in 2016. In the same year, she was appointed Assistant Professor at the Leading Research Center for Life Sciences at Hoshi University. In 2018, she became Lecturer at the Laboratory of Biomolecular Pharmacology at Hoshi University, and in 2023, she was appointed Lecturer at the same university, where she currently serves.

Lecture Overview

Kampo medicines are composed of multiple crude drugs and are therefore considered to exert diverse pharmacological effects. As a result, a single formula is expected to improve multiple symptoms and potentially mitigate adverse effects. However, the scientific evidence regarding their pharmacological mechanisms and the specific roles of their constituent crude drugs remains insufficient.

The speaker has been conducting research on Kampo medicines used in the treatment of constipation. In this lecture, she will present the latest research findings on the mechanisms underlying their purgative effects and their distinctive pharmacological characteristics.
