Exploring Life’s Vitality
with an Extraordinary Microscope

Our bodies are made up of approximately 37 trillion cells, but each individual cell is only about one hundredth of a millimeter in size—far too small to see with the naked eye. The proteins that work inside those cells are even smaller—about one thousandth the size of a cell—making them invisible even under ordinary microscopes. In such an ultra-microscopic world, do the laws of our everyday experience still apply?

In this talk, we’ll take you on a journey inside the mysterious world of living cells. We’ll introduce current research that aims to fulfill the long-standing dream of actually seeing the molecules at work within them—and share some of the unsolved mysteries that continue to challenge scientists today.

Guest Speaker

Dr. Yasushi Okada

Professor and Principal Investigator, International Research Center for Neurointelligence (WPI-IRCN), The University of Tokyo
Professor, Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, Division of Molecular Cell Biology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo

Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, in 1993 (M.D., Ph.D.). After serving as a JSPS Research Fellow and Research Associate at the same university, he was appointed Team Leader at the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technologies (now the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research) in 2011. In 2016, he became Professor in the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, The University of Tokyo (concurrently affiliated with RIKEN). Since 2020, he has served as Professor in the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo (concurrently affiliated with RIKEN and the Graduate School of Science).
His research focuses on cell biology and biophysics, utilizing advanced imaging techniques based on optical microscopy.
